Nice reminder of recency bias and the allure of the "shiny bright object". A grizzled medical mentor of mine always said that the smartest people in their field will spend 2/3 of their time reviewing "new things"/discoveries, but continually devote 1/3 to the time tested, foundational basics and continue to review the underpinnings. They are foundational for a reason, and yes over time they do seem to meld into the ground further and become even more sturdy. Good to read your writing again.
Good point about the washing machine. I have often thought about how easier life would have been for my mother had we had a washing machine and a freezer. Your post has reminded me to re-look at Taleb. (Apart from antifragility and the L indy effect, his concept of the intellectual -yet-idiot resonates with me!) I agree with everything you said: very interesting and thought provoking.
